“Unearth a Story” is a Michigan Geological Survey (MGS) educational outreach program that brings geology, paleontology, and Earth science to libraries, schools, and community events across the state.

What It Is

The MGS “Unearth a Story” initiative offers a digital toolkit with resources for libraries and families, designed to make Earth science engaging for children and adults alike. The toolkit includes:

  • Media resources – videos, slide decks, and links on topics like fossils, dinosaurs, and Earth’s history (e.g., What Are Fossils?EonsMary Anning, Fossil Hunter).
  • Maker resources – hands-on activities for creating models, fossils, or other science projects.
  • Fun & games – interactive games and activities for recreation and learning.
  • Booklist – a recommended reading list from the National Earth Science Teachers Association.

MGS can provide:

  • Speaker presentations on local geology and paleontology.
  • Exhibit tables and hands-on activities at libraries.
